Timeline of Resurrection Sunday
Potential Summary of events surrounding Resurrection
morning:
Perhaps two parties of women heading to the tomb in the
early morning (two Mary’s and Joanna (Lk 24:10).
Mary Magdalene for whatever reason reaches the tomb
first…saw the tomb open, understood it to mean that the body had been stolen
and hastily ran away to tell the disciples (Peter and John). Then the other
women reach the tomb, in one or two different parties. Seeing the rolled
stone they entered. An Angel filled them with fear, and told them that
Christ was not here, nor dead. He told them to go announce it to His
disciples…Go to Galilee.
Madgalene told Peter and John. They began to run
(Peter lost the race), John looks at the tomb, but Peter goes on in…they
leave after seeing the garments laying there in the tomb.
Magdalene now returns after they have left, she looks
into the tomb overwhelmed with sadness and sees two angels. Another
presence appears behind her. She turns… “Woman why are you weeping!” She
mistakes for gardener and finds out Jesus. Who encourages her and sends her
to the disciples rejoicing!
At this point two disciples even though heard the
resurrection leave town discouraged towards Emmaus. Jesus meets them.
At some point in this day Peter also saw Jesus (1 Cor
15:5).
They returned to the “re-gathering” of the group of
“Eleven” (minus Thomas) plus others (Luke 24:33). The Emmaus group found
them, everybody shared their story. One whole week passes without Thomas
believing. On that following Sunday, as they were gathered together again
(presumably to celebrate the resurrection) with Thomas this time, Christ
appears.
